Description – Intensive Leatherwork Training
Working by hand and with vegetable tanned leather this 7 day ‘Intensive Leatherwork Course’ offers a steep learning curve of traditional leather-working skills. This intermediate-advanced level course is ideal if you’d like to master a variety of traditional leatherwork techniques in one block. Mastering techniques such as these is crucial if you want to design and create more advanced, or detailed projects. While you’re here you can choose from the list below which of the techniques you’d like to focus on when designing your course project during the second half of the course. In addition, you will also benefit from creating sample sections of each of the remaining techniques.
Once learned, some of these techniques can be incorporated into your own hand-stitched leatherwork project which you can develop during the course and can complete at home if necessary – all students will be given support in creating an ‘order of assembly’ to take away with them so they can confidently complete their project.
Students will also benefit from a full day, of untutored ‘free-workshop’ time, to practise and develop the skills taught during the first half of the course. This time may also be used to design, plan and prepare for their student project.
Please note: The ‘Intensive Leatherwork Course’ is a demanding week of intensive skills development and students should be aware that this course is not recreational, but is suited to those who wish to advance their leatherwork skills in a short space of time. This course is run annually and places are generally reserved for previous students of GDH Leather Courses. Enquiries are also welcomed from those who have had some previous experience of traditional leatherwork but students should contact us before booking, so that we can discuss suitability.
Pre-prepared course notes will be provided and students will be supported by two professional leatherwork tutors.

I cannot recommend this course enough. If you are looking to expand your knowledge and learn knew skills you are in the right place. The level of attention from such a skilled team, ensures you are never in the dark and what Gaynor doesn't know isn't worth knowing! I came away feeling confident I could take my new skills to the next level. I have a folder full of notes and samples of all the stitching techniques learnt to keep referring back to. A fully functioning g pattern and card maquette of the bag I am to complete. A wonderful place, run by wonderful people I simply cannot recommend it enough. I wish I lived more locally so I could keep popping in.
I really enjoyed the intensive course, the place, people and tuition are all excellent. We learnt lots of traditional leatherwork techniques, making samples for future reference.Highly recommended
Intensive is a great description of this action packed course. We each came away with a full folder of samples of every technique we could possibly need to work independently. Attentive tuition ensures fine results, both in design and execution.Thoroughly enjoyable and excellent value for money.Highly recommended.
Really good course. Lots of helpful info on how to take your leatherwork to the next level. It's not just about bags ... the skills learned can be applied to making blokeish things too!
Busy schedule, loads to learn but most of all good fun. Thanks to Gaynor, Enya & Siân for their patience and good humour.
An excellent course. Lots of help and advice along the way.
All the techniques provided me with more skills to make different bags and items, making them look that bit different. The techniques I picked up have helped me deal with variations I hadn't planned on whilst making my latest bag, a mistake becomes a feature!
A great few days with good company, makes it fun to make bags.
What an excellent course - Gaynor is an great teacher, and her and her team will help you to learn so many new skills that you can't wait to use. I was delighted with the improvements I made, and I now have the confidence to try much bigger, more complicated bags from my own designs. It is such a lovely place to learn and with a friendly atmosphere you can't fail to have a good time. Many thanks to Gaynor, Enya and Sian for their support and unfailing patience. I do hope to come on another course soon!
