Beginner’s Guide to Leatherwork – live & online
Description – Beginner’s Guide to Leatherwork
If you’re thinking about taking up leatherwork then this short course is for you! When attending this live, online, introductory course you can be assured of professional advice to ensure that you get started on a professional footing!
The course will cover the following:
Essential tool-kit – When starting out in leatherwork, knowing which tools are essential and which are not can be tricky – and often costly! Tool sizes are another confusing aspect for beginners so having an understanding of these can be of enormous benefit to students when making initial tool purchases. Students will have the opportunity to see a good range of beginners’ tools on-screen and watch a brief demo on tool maintenance.
Leather – Taking up leatherwork as a hobby ideally requires some knowledge of the material. Having an overview of the different tanning processes, parts of the hide, leather substances and suggested uses for different animal skins will remove some of the apprehension beginner’s often associate with buying leather. While this course doesn’t include any *practical leatherwork, we’ll be discussing which parts of the hide would be used for specific leatherwork projects, and why. As this course is a beginner’s guide, there will be ample time set aside for student questions on this topic.
Other Materials – Aside from tools and leather, the leatherworker will use other materials such as threads, dyes, burnishing solutions and other materials. Knowledge and correct use of these can really help to give a finished project a wow factor!
Workshop Safety – This course would certainly be lacking if safe, working practices were ignored. These are tremendously important when using sharp knives and other leatherworking tools, so in order to avoid workshop accidents it is better to form good, safe working habits from the start. Students may be surprised to learn that they will take away some very useful tips from this section of the course…
*Please note that the Beginner’s Guide to Leatherwork course does not involve any practical, (hands-on) aspects of leatherwork for the student therefore, it is not necessary to purchase tools or leather in order to fully benefit from the course.
