Basic Tool Sharpening Skills – In Person Training Day

Description – Basic Tool Sharpening Skills – In Person

When starting out in leatherwork, students soon find the value in being able to sharpen their own tools. All too often we hear of students who are restricted to using disposable blades or instead buy new knives as they are lacking the skills required to keep their originals sharp.

During this short, in-person training day, students will learn how to obtain a sharp edge on the shoemaker’s and English paring knives. While they’re here, they’ll also set a harness awl blade into a haft (handle) before learning how to polish up the blade.  In the afternoon they will prepare and use a strop which will be theirs to take home. There will also be time for questions relating to the maintenance of other leather-working tools and students are encouraged to take notes throughout the day.

This is a very practical, hands-on day with students focussing solely on tool maintence. There will be ample opportunity to practise honing a range of tools including edge shaves and punches.

Knives, harness awls, sharpening equipment and materials will be provided for students to use, some of which will be available for purchase.

How much does this training day cost?

The cost of this training day is £95.00 and it runs from 10.00am to 3.30pm

Tools are not included in the price but the shoemaker’s knife, English paring knife and harness awl will be available to purchase separately.

Tell me what’s included in the price:

One day of professional tool-sharpening tuition with practical help and guidance during the day plus advice in sourcing essential tool-maintenance materials. A spacious work area is allocated to each student along with their own set of tools, sharpening equipment and materials to use while they’re here.

Each student will take home with them a hardwood strop, plus the skills to carry on maintaining their basic leatherwork tool kit at home.

Tea, coffee and afternoon cakes are provided too, so all you’ll need to bring along is yourself and a willingness to learn. There will be a maximum of 3 students on this course.

Yet another fantastic course taught by Gaynor. I hadn't fully appreciated quite how much my tools had suffered through enthusiastic use and not quite so enthusiastic maintenance! I arrived with a motley collection and left feeling like I had a brand new set! Normally several hours of sharpening would make my heart sink but as ever, tea, biscuits and chat made it whizz by. Now I have a solid skill set, keeping everything sharp is easy peasy!
