Butt and Box stitch. Part 1- Tool up!

Leather Tube. Butt and Box stitchedLeather pots, tubes and containers are something to not only store and protect something you cherish, but are to be cherished themselves. Hand made and hand stitched, these beautiful items can be made in almost any size once you’ve learnt how to create them.

First, you will need to master ‘Butt’ and ‘Box’ stitch. The next part of this series ‘Butt and Box Stitch. Part 2 – Understanding Butt Stitch’, will offer some tips and guidance when practising the first of these stitches.  Firstly, here’s a list of everything you’ll need:

  • 3mm – 3.5mm Vegetable Tanned Leather
  • Dividers
  • Sharp Harness Awl
  • Cork Block (approx’ dimensions of a placemat, but thicker, or tape two together)
  • No 6 or No 7 Pricking Iron
  • Linen Thread
  • Beeswax
  • 2 Harness Needles
